Frequently asked questions
Who Should Have the Flu Vaccine?
The flu vaccine is recommended for people who are at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell from flu. You should consider having the flu vaccine if you:
- Are aged 65 or over
- Have certain long-term health conditions
- Are pregnant
- Live in a care home
- Are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer’s allowance
- Live with someone who has a weakened immune system
Who Cannot Have the Flu Vaccine?
Most people who are eligible for the flu vaccine can safely receive it. However, you should not have the vaccine if you have previously had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose or to any ingredient in the vaccine.
Some flu vaccines used in the UK contain egg protein, so please let our pharmacist know if you have an egg allergy.
How Well Does the Flu Vaccine Work and How Long Does It Last?
The flu vaccine is designed to protect you against the most common strains of flu virus each year. While it is still possible to catch flu after vaccination, symptoms are likely to be milder and not last as long. It usually takes up to 14 days for the vaccine to provide full protection.
Immunity from the flu vaccine decreases over time, and the types of flu virus in circulation change each year. This is why it’s important to have the flu vaccine annually.
