Frequently asked questions
Am I at Risk of Typhoid Fever?
Typhoid fever is contracted by consuming unclean water or food that hasn’t been properly cooked or washed. It is most commonly found in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. In the UK, most cases occur following travel to countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Symptoms of Typhoid Fever
Symptoms usually develop within three weeks of infection, but can sometimes take up to six weeks to appear. They may include:
- High temperature, which may gradually increase over several days
- Headache
- Coughing
- Chills, aches, and pains
- Tiredness or feeling unwell
- Constipation (difficulty passing stools)
- Loss of appetite
- Tummy pain and diarrhoea, which often occur after other symptoms
- Some people may develop a rash of light-pink spots, typically on the upper body (this can be less visible on darker skin)
If not treated, typhoid fever can cause serious complications such as internal bleeding or infection of the lining of the abdomen (peritonitis).
How to Lower My Risk of Typhoid Fever?
When travelling to areas where typhoid is a risk, practising good food and water hygiene is essential. Here are some helpful tips:
Do:
- Drink only bottled or boiled water.
- Use bottled water to brush your teeth.
- Eat food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot.
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before eating.
- Peel or wash fruit and vegetables yourself before eating.
Don’t:
- Don’t have ice in your drinks.
- Don’t eat raw or lightly cooked meat or seafood.
- Don’t eat salads or uncooked fruit and vegetables unless you have washed or peeled them yourself.
- Don’t consume dairy products made from unpasteurised milk, such as some cheeses, yoghurts, or ice cream.
- Don’t eat food that has been left uncovered.
- Don’t prepare or serve food for others if you have, or suspect you may have, typhoid fever.
By following these simple steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of catching typhoid fever while abroad. For personalised travel health advice and typhoid vaccination, speak to our pharmacist before your trip.
