Shingles Vaccine
Shingles Vaccine at Our Pharmacy
Shingles is a common condition that causes a painful skin rash, caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster virus) later in life, and can sometimes lead to serious complications, including persistent nerve pain, hearing loss, or even vision problems.
The risk of developing shingles and experiencing severe symptoms increases as you get older or if your immune system is significantly weakened.
The shingles vaccine is designed to:
- Lower your risk of developing shingles
- Reduce the likelihood of serious complications if you do get shingles
By having the shingles vaccine at our pharmacy, you can help protect yourself from the pain and potential long-term effects of this condition.

Frequently asked questions
Who Should Have the Shingles Vaccine?
The shingles vaccine is recommended for:
- Adults aged 50 and over
- Those with a weakened immune system, depending on medical advice
If you are unsure whether you are eligible, our pharmacist can advise you on the best time to have the vaccine and whether it is suitable for you.
How is the Shingles Vaccine Given?
The shingles vaccine is given as an injection, usually in the upper arm. Depending on the type of vaccine used, you may need one or two doses, given several months apart.
How Well Does the Shingles Vaccine Work and How Long Does It Last?
The vaccine significantly reduces your risk of developing shingles and its complications. Protection lasts for several years, and while it does not guarantee you will not get shingles, it usually makes any future episodes milder and shorter.
Who Cannot Have the Shingles Vaccine?
Most people who are eligible for the shingles vaccine can safely receive it.
You should not have the vaccine if you have previously experienced a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose or to any ingredient in the vaccine.
If you have concerns about allergies or your suitability for the shingles vaccine, our pharmacist is available to provide advice and answer any questions you may have.
