Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine
HPV Vaccine at Our Pharmacy
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common group of viruses that usually cause no problems, but some types can lead to genital warts or certain cancers. The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect yourself against the types of HPV that can cause these conditions.
What is the HPV Vaccine For?
The HPV vaccine helps reduce your risk of contracting human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus that spreads mainly through skin-to-skin contact, often during sexual activity. While most types of HPV are harmless, some are linked to a higher risk of cancers, including:
- Cervical cancer
- Mouth and throat cancer
- Anal cancer
- Penile cancer
- Vulval and vaginal cancer
HPV infection can also cause genital warts.

Frequently asked questions
Who Should Have the HPV Vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is recommended for:
- Children aged 12 to 13 years old
- People at higher risk of HPV infection
Our pharmacist can advise you if you are unsure whether the HPV vaccine is suitable for you or your child.
Who Cannot Have the HPV Vaccine?
Most people who are eligible for the HPV vaccine can safely receive it. You should not have the vaccine if you have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose or to any ingredient in the vaccine.
There is no evidence that the vaccine is harmful during pregnancy, but you may be advised to wait until after pregnancy to have it. The HPV vaccine can be given while breastfeeding.
Who Should Have the TBE Vaccine?
The TBE vaccine is recommended if you are travelling to areas where TBE is common and plan to spend time outdoors.
You will need at least two injections, given at least two weeks apart, to ensure you are protected before travel. The first dose should be administered at least one month prior to departure.
How is the HPV Vaccine Given?
The HPV vaccine is given as an injection, usually into the upper arm. The number of doses you need depends on your age and immune system:
- People under 25 years old usually need one dose
- People aged 25 to 45 usually need two doses, given between 6 months and 2 years apart
- People with a weakened immune system may require three doses over a 12-month period
Symptoms of Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
HPV infection does not usually cause any symptoms, so most people are unaware they have it. In some cases, HPV can cause painless growths or lumps around the genital area (genital warts).
