Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine

Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine at Our Pharmacy

Japanese encephalitis is a rare but potentially serious infection caused by a virus spread through mosquito bites in certain parts of the world. If you’re planning to travel to an area where Japanese encephalitis is present, vaccination is an effective way to protect yourself.

The vaccine is recommended if you are:

  • Staying in an affected country for more than a month
  • Visiting rural areas or locations close to rice fields, wetlands, or pig farms
  • Taking part in outdoor activities where you may be exposed to mosquitoes

The Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available privately at our pharmacy. Our pharmacist can advise you on whether the vaccine is right for your travel plans.

Frequently asked questions

Am I at Risk of Japanese Encephalitis?

While the overall risk of TBE is low, ticks that spread the virus can be found in:

  • Most of Europe, including the UK
  • Russia
  • Parts of China and Japan

Ticks typically live in woodlands and grassy areas, but may also be found in some parks and gardens. In the UK, only a very small number of ticks carry the TBE virus, so even if bitten, the likelihood of becoming seriously unwell is minimal. TBE can also be contracted by consuming raw (unpasteurised) milk or dairy products.

Most people infected with Japanese encephalitis do not develop symptoms. If symptoms do occur, they are often mild and flu-like, such as:

  • Headache
  • High temperature
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

In rare cases, the infection can progress and affect the brain, leading to more severe symptoms, including:

  • Severe headache
  • Confusion
  • Paralysis (loss of movement or feeling in parts of the body)
  • Seizures (fits)

If you’re travelling to areas where Japanese encephalitis is a concern, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk of being bitten by mosquitoes:

  • Apply insect repellent to exposed skin, ideally one that contains at least 50% DEET.
  • Sleep under a mosquito net that has been treated with insecticide.
  • Where possible, wear long-sleeved tops, trousers or long skirts, socks, and shoes to protect your skin from mosquito bites.
  • Seek advice from a travel vaccination pharmacy before you travel to ensure you’re fully protected.

Our pharmacist is available to provide tailored travel health advice and recommend the most suitable vaccinations for your destination.
